SCAMPER

It can often be difficult to come up with new ideas when you’re trying to develop or improve a product or service.

This is where creative brainstorming techniques like SCAMPER can help. This tool helps you generate ideas for new products and services by encouraging you to think about how you could improve existing ones.

SCAMPER stands for:

S= Substitute
C= Combine
A= Adapt
M= Modify
P= Put to other use
E= Eliminate
R= Rearrange

You use the tool by asking questions about existing products, using each of the seven prompts above. These questions help you come up with creative ideas for developing new products, and for improving current ones.

Next task: business model for facebook

Facebook is one of the most popular Social Network and micro-blogging plattform in the world. It enables its users to share long text message, pictures, videos and chatting.
Facebook was started by Mark Zuckerberg, 23, while he was a student at Harvard in 2004. The general concept was to digitize the legendary freshman-year “facebook,” and allow students not only to gawk at one another’s photos but also to flirt, network, interact.

Eventually, the site moved beyond college to high-school networks, then company networks, then everyone. At the same time, it began adding features, most notably that allows you to track what your friends are doing on Facebook.

With so many users connected to the platform and using it on a regular basis, it is becoming an attractive destination for advertisers. Facebook business goal is simple: Increase the number of users using the service because this will help attract more advertisers.

“If you never try, you never know”

This week, we have to post about “IDEO”.

What is IDEO?

It’s the hot design company hired by Apple to create its first mouse, (and by Microsoft to create its second), by the Post Office to rework the postbox, by Muji to create its wall-mounted CD player and by Procter & Gamble to reinvent toothpaste tubes. It made the Nokia N-gage, the Palm V and the Head Airflow tennis racquet.

IDEO is an international design and innovation consultancy. The company uses methods of human centered design and the design thinking approach.
They have employee in the areas like Industrial design, interaction design, communication design, engineering, software programming, branding, economics, anthropology, and psychology all over the world, for example in Palo Alto, San Francisco, Boston, New York, London, Munich.

As a global innovation consultancy the IDEO Company opens new opportunities for growth, future business and competitive advantages. They focus on the relationship with their target groups: Only those who really know and understand their customers can provide marketable value.

Together with their customers they create something new: They develop products and services that make spaces and brand experience, define positioning and organization for tomorrow’s market. Throughout the entire process there is an interdisciplinary team at the side of their clients: consultant, passionate, creative – from the right strategic questions about the idea development to implementation.

The

company was founded in 1991 through the merger of three design studios: David Kelley Design (founded by David Kelley, a professor at Stanford University and co-founder and director of the d.school – The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design), ID Two (founded by Bill Moggridge) and matrix Product Design (founded by Mike Nuttall). “IDEO” combining form of the word idea, as it is used in words like “ideogram” or “ideology”.

There were five steps in IDEO’s high-speed innovation process: understand, observe, visualize, implement, and evaluate. Extensive research began the process, followed by observations of end users. The visualization step leaned towards producing a series of inexpensive prototypes, rather than poring over lists of specifications. IDEO carefully researched consumer behavior through the eyes of its social scientists to find out what was truly required. The company also asked clients to participate in the role of their own customers, shopping for services and products from rival companies as well.

Bill Moggridge, the grey-bearded British co-founder of IDEO, a Royal Designer for Industry and the designer of the world’s first laptop, explains how IDEO, design thinking and his own ideas came about. “I think in the early days, in an industrial- design consultancy, people probably came to us because they thought we could do cool-looking stuff,” he says. “The difference was that I always insisted on trying to understand what people would think and what they would want. The simplest way of doing that was to make sure that we saw the real world.

NIKE – just do it.

NIKE is an American sporting goods company, which belongs to one of the world’s most prominent suppliers for the industry. Two great visionaries believed they could revolutionize the design and sales of sport shoes. They were right. The idea became Nike, the largest sportswear manufacturer in the world. The company was founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight first under the name “Blue Ribbon Sports”. Phil Knight was a talented middle-distance runner from Portland and Bill Bowerman was a nationally respected track and field coach at the University of Oregon, who was constantly seeking ways to give his athletes a competitive advantage. Then in 1971, “Blue Ribbon Sports” was renamed in Nike. The name comes from the Greek goddess of victory Nike. She lived with Zeus on Olympus. In antiquity they flew back and forth from their mountain down to help the Greeks, when they went into battle. NIKE and the belief in the success motivates to high performance.  Today the winners will also “inspired” from NIKE. The main focus of NIKE is the design, development and distribution of high quality sports equipment. This includes shoes, clothes, sports equipment and tools, and accessories. The Group is one of the largest distributors of sports shoes and clothing, and markets its products through distributors and retailers, brand stores, over the Internet and various intermediaries in over 170 countries around the world. a)      Technology

The “age of abundance” is over. Conspicuous consumption, wanton waste of natural resources, cheap energy – those days are long gone. In this new world, resources are scarce, and sustainability is a business imperative.

Nike had a deep look at what they need to make process in this new world. One key is: Focus on materials. The choice of materials for their products has environmental implications – implications for water, land, energy and chemical use. Nike wants to take an active role in defining the future of materials. They focus on:

  • What materials they use – more recycled and recyclable materials
  • Better processes – exploring new ideas of processing with less energy, water, chemicals or waste
  • Better choices – creating and applying indexes, restricted substance lists, policies and better ways of operating
  • Bringing choices to scale – increasing the scale and availability of new material choices

Innovate

Furthermore NIKE’s corporate responsibility strategy comes from insights they have gained from their experience with innovation. The last three years, NIKE used the new insights to experiment with innovative sustainability solutions. Their long-term vision for Considered is to design products using the fewest possible materials, designed for easy disassembly and capable of being recycled into new products.

b)     Process

For NIKE it’s not only about getting better at what they do, it’s more about pursuit for the best, creating value for the business and innovating a better world.
NIKE focus on six impacts:

Energy and climate

The Climate change, it’s nothing new. Global warming is a big issue to handle in our world today. NIKE is reducing the own contributions toward climate change. That’s a primary aim of their sustainability strategy. They want to drive innovation, collaboration and public policy advocacy to deliver carbon reductions across the value chain.

Employment

NIKE had some bad critics in the past about their behavior towards the employee. They were judged because of the bad work conditions. Now they got for a new aim to improve the work conditions in their footwear, apparel and equipment supply chains. They are working with contract factories to build their human resources management skills and help them reach higher levels of economic, social and environmental performance.

Chemistry

NIKE wants to make their products in any ways that protect the workers, consumers and the environment. One point of this is to reduce, eliminate and responsibly manage chemicals in their supply chain.

Water

Water is a low available in the world. NIKE has set itself the task to produce materials with less water and helping material providers to reduce their water-related impacts. They also want to give clean water back to the communities.

Waste

NIKE wants to achieve producing with less waste left. They want to reduce the waste of packaging, shipping material and product sample. Furthermore, they set itself the aim to also reduce the manufacturing waste, such as scrap fabric, leather and rubber.

Community

NIKE believes in a strong human potential. They focus on the development of their employees with focused areas of impact through innovation, partnership, advocacy and movement making.

NIKE has to find answers to business challenges. Innovators have to create new ways to recycle and reduce waste and turn into new products. Designers must look at new sustainable raw materials.

c)      Product

NIKE is the world’s leading innovator in athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessories. They have a very huge sports variety. You can categorize them into 10 specific parts:

NIKE cooperates with Stüssy to bring authentic street style to any terrain.

NIKE designed a lot of athletic clothes for harsh weather and water resistance.

NIKE has also a lot of clothes designed for every kind of sports.

Some of the greatest tennis-players are in contract with NIKE, like Roger Federer or Serena Williams. They   represent NIKE as the best brand for sports.

NIKE has also a category only for woman. The organize a lot of marathons for woman for donation in cancer research.

Most innovative product of NIKE is the Fuelband ‘Ice’ and the Sportwatch GPS Collection. They help during sports to know its limitations and to go beyond its limits.

d)      Business model

OUR MISSION:

TO BRING INSPIRATION AND INNOVATION TO EVERY ATHLETE IN THE WORLD*

*IF YOU HAVE A BODY, YOU ARE AN ATHLETE

Transnational Company

NIKE is aimed at local adaptability with the advantages of a global Coordination to unite through a network of resources and capabilities. In this act, the individual national business units to a certain extent independent of funding. This will enable individual Branches according to their core competencies or national benefits in the interest of entire group specialize. The Headquarter is coordinating this interacting network of companies. In such transnational companies a cross-border value chains can be established and combined with the benefits of individual sites.

Organization of NIKE

NIKE invested a sustainable business model that is called Sustainable Business and Innovation (SB&I). They figured the SB&I from different separate functions: the former Corporate Responsibility team, and the Lean, Energy and Compliance teams that work with the suppliers.
The strategy focus on three aspects:

  • Sustainable products
  • Sustainable manufacturing
  • Sustainable marketplace

The Report of the SB&I is reported to the vice president of Sustainable Business and Innovation, who reports directly to the NIKE CEO and to the Corporate Responsibility Committee of the Board Directors.

Strategy of NIKE

NIKE wants to get into a sustainable economy. They have three main focuses how to get there:

  • Innovate to deliver enterprise-level sustainability solutions
  • Integrate sustainability into the heart of the NIKE business model
  • Mobilize key constituents (civil society, employees, consumers, government and industry) to partner in scaling solutions

For Nike Innovation is the heart of their business growth strategy. They focus since a long time to be better and helping to create the world’s most innovative products for consumer all over the world. This same philosophy and determination is driving change in how they approach corporate responsibility in today’s marketplace. To be the leading athletic brand in the world – today and into the future – they have to deliver innovative new products and experiences in a more sustainable way. Nike believes in the universal power of sport to create positive social change, to build teamwork, leadership, self-confidence and fitness, and to break down barriers such as discrimination and racism. And their slogan “Just do it” is not only for marketing purposes, but they also fixed component of the company’s internal structure because the staff is delegated responsibility by the staff is a high degree of initiative expected. So a company’s success is primarily due to the successful development of its own corporate culture and brand system. Nike’s corporate culture is the personality, the pursuit of his very personal brand. With this culture they are very successful.

3. Make suggestions or predictions of future innovations to the company concerned.

The game has changed, forever.

NIKE has set ambitious targets: By 2011, all the shoes meet to the “Considered” standards: Lower pollution, eco-friendly materials and full of innovations, such as water-based adhesives. By 2015, all the clothes should follow and until 2020, all of the NIKE products. Anyone can see that NIKE is on an educational way: The first “Considered” Shoe-saw right from eco, the new models are designed, how you just wish for sneakers. Whether the Pegasus 25 running shoe (the best-selling running shoe), the Air Jordan XX3, or free hybrid.
Michael Braungart advised Nike for this plan already in the nineties and helped in the selection of non-polluting materials. Why is the whole then called “Considered” and not Cradle to Cradle? Because NIKE would have to pay royalties, and there were differences over the contract. Now the sneaker producer from Oregon convert the “cradle to cradle” principles without any label. This includes a comprehensive recycling program, wherein a new sports ground floors is making out of old shoes, as well as the intention to be carbon neutral by 2017. One can only hope that not only the Nike shoes are copied, but also the “Considered” principles.

In my opinion, NIKE has to face with different problems of their innovations, like environmental problems. The material resources of the world are getting less and rising energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions lead to increasing pressure on traditional production and manufacturing. Their challenge is now to innovate consistently and systemically throughout their business; the circle from the beginning of designing to manufacturing to marketplace to recycling and reusing and to bring discipline and focus on systematic change. They can’t achieve this alone and have to get new partnerships and collaborations to find creative solutions. That also will take new models of innovation, new forms of collaboration, new financial instruments and new business approaches. NIKE has to change some points in their public policy because the company is among others accused in the “Black Company” of exploitation, child work and other abuses supplier factories. But above this, their vision is clear: to thrive in a sustainable economy where people, profit and planet are in balance. Over the past few years NIKE has achieved really much success and is now the dominance in the in the field of sporting goods manufacturer.

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow” (Albert Einstein)

Our next task is to post about the most important people of the world, positions 11.-20. and we have to think about a way to remember these positions with a story or sentences.

Firstly here are the positions from 11.-20.:

11. Louis Pasteur
12. Galileo Galilei
13. Aristotle
14. Euclid
15. Moses
16. Charles Darwin
17. Shih Huang Ti
18. Augustus Ceasar
19. Nicolaus Copernicus
20. Antoine Laurent Lavoisier

One day, Louis Pasteur decided to do a new chemical experiment. He asked Galileo Galilei for help because his last experiment failed and Galileo Galilei was also a mathematics and astronomer and Louis Pasteur wanted to broaden his horizon. But unfortunately Galileo Galilei was sick, so he couldn’t help him. Luckily there was Aristotele, who was also famous for logic, biology and physics. So on a warm Sunday morning they both decided to start a new experiment. Suddenly Euclid came over and wanted to join them; he also has skills in mathematics and is often called the “Father of Geometry”. Louis Pasteur agreed. It was a special experiment on the water. But as they arrived at the next water, they were really surprised because the water was divided into two parts by Moses and Charles Darwin was also there, researching for a rare fish species. The experiment had to be postponed. Unexpectedly there came a ship along the divided water. On the ship there was Shih Huang Ti and Augustus Caesar.  Shih Huang Ti wanted to explore new orders for universal standardization of weights, measures, axle lengths on carts and the writing of the Chinese language. August Caesar followed him because he wanted to search for new soldiers for his army. But actually, the day is coming to an end and Louis Pasteur was very disappointed because he couldn’t make a new experiment but then Nicolaus Copernicus appeared and was watching the stars because he is a famous astronomer. His old friend Antoine Laurent Lavoisier accompanied him and Louis Pasteur was thinking, why not joining them? So they all watched the stars together.

“Collect moments not things”

“Tell me about your most important innovation in your..”

This week, our professor asked us about our most important innovation in our..
So I’m going to tell you something about the most important innovation in my life.

Humans are definitely the planet’s designated experts in the field of invention and innovation. Our use of invention, or the innovation of process in new ways, may be what truly defines us as a species. Every once in a long while, something is invented which changes, in some small or some big way. Over time, this has made us unique among the animals. While little inventions and innovations come out every day, it is THIS big one that’s the important one for me.

Skype/Internet

So firstly, if there is no internet, then there wouldn’t be any using of Skype. So one of the greatest innovation in our time is the internet, too. Having had the Internet in our lives from childhood onward has had a significant impact on both what and how we learn, not to mention every other facet of our lives. Freedom of information means something very different to compare it to the past. We have become used to almost unlimited access to almost unlimited information. The world was different before the Internet.

Without the Internet, you would not be reading this. There would be no way to instantly find the name of the movie your favorite actor was in five years ago or how much it costs to fly to Indonesia. Online shopping, online banking.. Today, with a couple of clicks, you can go anywhere in the world without leaving your computer.

And for me, it is also Skype connecting to the Internet, which is my most important innovation in my life.
In 2010 my little sister, Lucy, went to the USA to do an Au-Pair-Year there. So she was really far away and I’d missed her a lot but with Skype it was possible to see and hear her, if the Internet worked and then she didn’t seem that far away. It was good to hear her voice and to talk about what was going on in our lives. With Skype it is possible to call your family and friends and share a story, celebrate a birthday, learn a language, hold a meeting, work with colleagues – just about anything you need to do together every day.  Skype is used on phones or computers or a TV with Skype on it. It is free to start using Skype – to speak, see and instant message other people on Skype for example. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Luxembourg, Skype is a division of Microsoft Corp

So now I’m in a distant land and I’m skyping with my family and friends who remained in Germany and it’s good to see them all and talk to them. Of course it’s not the same as in real life with skype but it helps to overcome the huge distance.

„I wish I was a camera sometimes, so I could take your picture with my mind.“

So the next task for this week is to give an opinion on this question:
What is the most creative company and why?

I think, the most creative and innovative company in the world is Google.

If someone wants to close its knowledge gaps today, they look it up on the internet. There are lots of search engines but probably the best known and most-used brand of search help is Google. Once founded from Larry Page and Sergey Brin in a hall of residence at the Stanford University , Google has developed to the biggest free online archive of information of the world. The Google search engine receives about a billion search requests per day and has the largest network of translators in the world

So what does Google actually mean?

The company had the aim to organize gigantic crowds of information in the web and make those available for all users worldwide. So a suitable name was needed, which could reflect this big dimension at all. The enterprisers found him in a variation of the mathematical concept “Googol”. It’s the mathematical technical term for „10 high 100“, i.e. for a one with hundred zeros. This mathematical value is bigger than the the sum of all elementary particles of the humanely tangible universe and no one can write it down with figures in the decimal system. Therefore, the mathematician Edward Kasner asked his nine-year-old nephew to invent a word for this number. So mathematics came to their technical term “Googol” and the biggest searching machine to their name Google.

So Google is used everywhere, first of all for searching but also for advertising, statistics, translation and maps from any city in the world. And in addition to that, you can be creative with google and try new things. The company from California has built up a huge software empire and reaches for always new business segments. I think, there is no one who never used google in his life and no one can think of without it. Today everything is possible with google, or not to say: impossible is nothing with google.

“Everything will be fine in the end and if it’s not, then it’s not the end” (India)

Task 2

Our second task is to answer two questions:

1. Why does we need to be creative?
I think, we need to be creative to express ourselves. Most people connect creativity with the arts. Creativity limits itself not only on making music, singing, dancing, drawing or doing sport. Creativity is used everywhere where it matters to find new ways, new solutions or new ideas. We need creativity in all possible areas, e.g.:

  • product development
  • strategic questions for a company
  • to solve problems (privately or in jobs)
  • by planning our vacation
  • with the creation of our flat
  • and with many things more.

Everyone can be creative in his own way. In my opinion it is very important for us to be creative because only then we can develop our personalities and find the way to ourselves.

2. Who is the most creative figure? Why?
First of all, what is creative? And how can we measure creativity? I guess, it’s difficult to answer because nowhere is written down how creativity is measured. But I think, everybody who can think is also able to have ideas. So take for example a big company like apple. Apple is the most creative company in the world, so it’s said in the statistic. But I think, there are not only big companies, which can be creative with new innovation.
For me the most creative figures are children. As children we were more creative than we are today. Remember once which fantastic plays we could played with other children or alone in our imagination or how we have painted with so much pleasure and fun.
Or which creative inspirations to our sense came, if we wanted to make something with simple things. There is probably no one who was never creative in any form.

There is a saying from Alighieri Dante:

“Three things have remained to us from the paradise:
Stars, flowers and children.”
